How we're Continuing to do our Part in Preventing Further Damage to Our Planet
From the very beginning, Skinny Fizz has been skinny in all areas; on ingredients and environmental impact.
We’re big on leaving as little of a footstep on our planet as possible. That’s why every step of our processes has been carefully considered in what will be the least harmful to this big, beautiful rock we call home.
We thought we’d break down our processes, showing you how we continue to reduce our carbon emissions while producing our beloved drink range. Let’s get started.
From Plant to Can
Skinny Fizz is made from triple-filtered sparkling water and real homegrown fruit. Every part of our products is sourced right here in Aotearoa. We source our lemon and limes from Gisborne while our raspberries come from Waikato. These are added to our drinks as a carefully curated extract.
Our fruit extracts are made by harvesting the fruit then pressing, spinning and filtering it into a concentrate. This process ensures the fruits flavour and nutritional benefits are maintained. You’ll also notice in our drinks (especially our raspberry) this process ensures the colour of the fruit is kept intact.
The fruit extract is then combined with our sparkling water at the factory. We use a shared space in Auckland to combine and fill the cans. This way, we reduce our CO2 emissions by using existing infrastructure rather than creating and maintaining our own.
Often, we get asked, why cans? This is because not only are our aluminium cans infinitely recyclable, but they are also lighter to transport compared to other materials like glass. A lighter truck load means less petrol being used in transport across the country and therefore less emissions.
Not only are our cans recyclable but we’ve reduced our materials wherever we can. For example, we keep as much of our presence online as possible, reducing any physical byproducts of the brand circulating such as marketing materials. We don’t create business cards or any business documents, rather keeping these all electronic. We also don’t have any head office space or branded cars (lots of paint). Even our packaging is kept to the minimal, so no unnecessary waste occurs.
Our partnership with Carbon Click
Of course, we can never be perfect when it comes to our carbon footprint (although we try our best). That’s why we also partner with the New Zealand company CarbonClick to help offset our emissions.
Carbon offsetting is the process of ‘carbon trading’ where companies will compensate their carbon emissions by investing in projects that aid in reducing the consequences of climate change. By partnering with CarbonClick, this allows us to contribute to the great work they’re doing across the world.
Here’s a couple of projects Carbon Click are currently working on:
Flax Hills Forever Forest, Kaikōura New Zealand
This is a 150-hectare area that is in the process of being reverted from a grazing are back to a native forest.
Banks Peninsula Forever Forest, Canterbury New Zealand
Also a 190-hectare property that's being reverted from grazing back to a native forest.
Improved Cooking Practices in Nigeria
This project is working on distributing efficient charcoal cookstoves that are both emission and household spending reducing, while also improving family’s health across the country.
To learn more about the projects CarbonClick are working on or to contribute, head to their website.
You can also contribute to CarbonClick by clicking the green button at checkout when purchasing your Skinny Fizz restock. When you click this button, it adds a small contribution to your transaction which goes towards purchasing carbon offsets and offsetting the carbon emissions created from your purchase.
Thank you for your continuous support of Skinny Fizz and our mission of doing our bit and helping the planet.
