Why Simple Ingredients Matter: A Look at New Zealand's Drinks Market
Most drinks on the shelves aren’t as simple as you think.
Walk down any drinks aisle and you’re met with options galore. From sparkling waters and soft drinks to kombuchas, energy drinks and flavoured waters, there's no shortage of choice.
And we know the big names are bad for us – we bet a drink came straight to mind!
But do you ever check the ingredients on a drink before you buy it? Yep, even the ‘healthy’ ones? We’re overwhelmed with advertising of drinks marketed as "natural", "healthy" or "better for you", yet a closer look reveals the true story. If it really is 'natural' then why not just way what it is?
Here’s a look at how our shelves are roughly stacked:
(based on market estimates when looking at the composition of a typical New Zealand supermarket beverage aisle, not factual statistics)
|
Category |
Approx. % of drinks on shelves |
|
Water (still & sparkling) |
15–20% |
|
100% juices |
10–15% |
|
Kombucha & fermented drinks |
2–5% |
|
Clean sparkling waters with minimal ingredients (Skinny Fizz!) |
2–5% |
|
Drinks with added sugar, sweeteners, flavours, preservatives, or functional additives |
60–75% |
That’s a pretty heavy sway towards drinks filled with crap, right?
So what makes a drink "clean" and how can we find them?
Generally speaking, a clean-label drink is one that contains:
✅ Ingredients you can recognise
✅ Minimal processing
✅ No artificial sweeteners
✅ No artificial colours
✅ No preservatives
✅ A short and transparent ingredient list
✅ No 'natural flavours'
And the tolerance for these is different for everyone, but I think we can all agree the less random words the better.
So next time you're browsing the drinks aisle, take a moment to flip the can around and read the ingredients list. Once you do, you can’t unsee it.
We’ve now likely made you feel bad about your favourite drink. Well, that’s where we re-introduce ourselves:

Skinny Fizz contains just two ingredients:
• Sparkling water
• Real fruit extract, homegrown right here in Aotearoa.
That's it.
No artificial sweeteners.
No preservatives.
No added sugar.
No ingredients you need to Google.
Because when faced with this drink choice dilemma, we decided to make our own instead. A refreshingly real drink that tasted great without all the extra nonsense.
The Bottom Line
As consumers we must continue seeking out drinks made with real ingredients, more transparent products and minimal processing so that the table can be flipped and our options are changed for the better.
It’s down to us to stick it to the big ones, and make a real change.
